One of the best places to search for creative language to incorporate into your yoga classes is to take classes, online or in person, with your favourite teachers. Listen intently to their offerings, suggestions and word choices. Notice what resonates with you, and which descriptive words they choose to use, that make sense in your body and translate well for you on your mat. Notice particular phrases or cues that they use, that you find effective, clear and concise, while also creating a tone and mood for the class that you enjoy. You can then use some of this creative language in your own classes to see how it feels and if it feels authentic to you as a teacher and to your offering and intention.
Time and experience in the seat of the teacher is also a great way to build a library of creative language. As we become more confident with guiding a safe and accessible class, we can start to explore our use of language and experiment with words and phrasing to see what feels right to us and resonates well with our students.
A great place to source different ways of saying the same word is to use a thesaurus and look for synonyms. For example, the word RELAX could also be: settle, simmer, ease, soften, unwind, yield, surrender, release and so on.
We also offer an online course that supports you in developing this skill:
